Kauai has many great dining options.  We really enjoy the fresh fish and classic Hawaiian preparations.  This section includes descriptions and pictures of some restaurants that we especially enjoy.  Consult other guide books for a full list.   We recently discovered a terrific new Kauai restaurant guidebook called Tasting Kaua'i by Marta Lane.   We recommend it highly.

 

We have only included restaurants that we have visited or those within walking distance.  There are many other great restaurants that are not listed here.   If you aren't sure what to order, the best choice is usually a seafood dish.  It does not get any fresher than here!

Kauai is one of the most laid back and casual vacation destinations.  Most restaurants are casual and you can wear shorts, t-shirts and sandals.  The dress code for the fanciest restaurants on Kauai is a collared shirt (Hawaiian is best), shorts and closed toe shoes for men.  For women, a sundress or shorts and blouse are fine.  Leave your dress shirts, ties, dress shoes and sports coats at home.  You won’t use them here.  Call the restaurant if you aren’t sure of the dress code.

Whenever we eat at a restaurant or participate in an activity where we are being provided a service, we make sure to leave a good tip.  Those in the service industry particularly have a challenging time with the high cost of living on Kauai.  Many work more than one job to make ends meet.  When you receive great service, please tip generously.

 

You may want to make reservations for the finest restaurants.  To get the best choice of tables with the best views, consider making an early reservation (5:00 pm - 6:00 pm).  You can ask how early they recommend in order to get one of their better tables.  We make reservations for a few of our favorite restaurants a couple weeks before we arrive.
